Presenter: Brother Fred Cabras OFM Capuchin, LCSW
Director of Social Services Capuchin Soup Kitchen, Detroit; Board Member for National Catholic Partnership on Disability Brother Fred Cabras became a member of the Capuchin Franciscan Province of St. Joseph in 2011 and was ordained as a Roman Catholic priest in 2019 (but still goes by Brother Fred.) He is the Director of Social Services for the Capuchin's Soup Kitchen, Detroit, MI. Before relocating to Detroit in 2020, Br. Cabras worked as a licensed inpatient and emergency room psychiatric social worker at the Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he worked with a multidisciplinary team. He also previously served as coordinator of a social justice program providing regional resources for the homeless, as assistant staff member for a day program for adults with developmental disabilities, as case manager for persons experiencing homelessness while also offering sacramental ministries to a local Catholic community. He received his Master of Divinity Degree from the Catholic Theological Union, a Master of Social Work with a specialization in Mental Health from Loyola University, and a Bachelor of Psychology from the University of Illinois, in Chicago, IL. Br. Cabras is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) for the State of Illinois and Michigan. |
Workshop overview:
We will begin with a a basic "Mental Health 101" training through the lens of spiritual guidance. We will then talk about the importance of stigma-free language, education, and presence. He will offer insights about mental health challenges, provide tools to help walk with a person who has a mental health challenge, and discuss the importance of the language that we use when talking about mental health challenges. We will also look at how to talk about depression, anxiety and other prevalent conditions with children and youth.
Pre-registration is required for this workshop (those who pre-registered in August/September just need to notify us if plans changed.) Earn up to 4 general hours towards certification/renewal.
