Completion of 100 hours of instruction within five years:
  • Elementary Catechesis: Forming Children as Disciples (10 hours)
  • Sowing God's Word (10 hours) 
  • Introduction to Catholic Morality (10 hours)
  • Catholic Social Teaching (10 hours)
  • Catholic Belief and Tradition (20 hours)
  • Introduction to Scripture (20 hours) ​
  • General Courses (20 hours) ​
In the FIRST FIVE YEARS, earn a One Year Certificate annually by completing 20 hours each year. 

For RENEWAL of a Four Year Certificate, complete 30 hours during the four years.

​Catholic High School Religion Teacher
 Completion of: ​  20 Roman Catholic college semester credits in theology and religious education. 
​  Areas must include*:
  • Scripture (3 college credits)
  • Catechesis  (3 college credits)
  • Introduction to Catholic Morality  (3 college credits)
  • Catholic Social Teaching  (3 college credits)
  • Creed/ Catholic Beliefs and Traditions  (3 college credits)
  • Sacraments/Liturgy (3 college credits)
  • General (2 college credits)

* or a Master's Degree in (Catholic) Religious Education or equivalent with the above requirements met                      (10.16.25)
In the FIRST FIVE YEARS, earn a One Year Certificate annually by completing 3-6 college credits each year.

  • Master's Degree in Religious Education or approved equivalent, e.g. Master's Degree in Education with background in theology or Master's Degree in theology with background in education.

QUALIFICATIONS  
of Catechists ​& Other Pastoral Ministers

  • Parish ministers are to be practicing Catholics who
    • Live in the Spirit of Jesus
    • Participate in the sacramental life of the Church
    • Know and witness to the teachings and traditions of the Roman Catholic Church.
  • Parish ministers are to demonstrate ongoing intellectual and spiritual growth as a lived priority to nurture personal and communal faith.
  • Parish ministers are to be certified at or working toward the level of diocesan certification required for their ministry; e.g. catechist certification.
  • Parish ministers are to be in compliance with the Diocese of Youngstown Safe Environment Policy for the Protection of Children and Vulnerable Adults.
  • Parish ministers are to be at least 21 years of age (or 18 years of age if accompanied at the ministry site by a qualified adult)
