VOCATIONS

The laity, by their very vocation, seek the kingdom of God by engaging in temporal affairs and by ordering them according to the plan of God. They live in the world, that is, in each and in all of the secular professions and occupations. They live in the ordinary circumstances of family and social life, from which the very web of their existence is woven. They are called there by God that by exercising their proper function and led by the spirit of the Gospel they may work for the sanctification of the world from within as a leaven. Lumen Gentium (“Dogmatic Constitution on the Church”), Pope Paul VI, 1964 #31

Vocation Lessons
Designed for grades K to 12, these lessons will help you to teach about vocations, what they are and how we all have one.  Special emphasis is given to the vocations of marriage, priesthood and religious life.  All lessons are on-line and can be used at any time.  The lessons are broken down for Catholic schools, religious education and youth ministry.  You are welcome to go into any section and use the lesson that best serves your needs.  Because the Vocations office pays for the license to utilize these resources they are totally FREE for you to use.  You can use them as many times throughout the year as you would like.  Brochures that explain the program in greater detail are available from the Vocations office.  To access the website go to: vocationlessons.com.  Once in the website, go the top right corner and input the following password: youvocations330.

Called by Name: Preparing Yourself for the Vocation of Catechetical Leader, Joe Paprocki, Loyola Press, 2017. AS A DISCIPLE OF CHRIST called to the vocation of a catechetical leader, you are responsible for coordinating your community’s effort to form disciples of Christ. But before you can focus on what you need to KNOW and what you need to DO to be successful in this role, it is essential that you focus on who you need to BE as a leader. In this first volume of The Effective Catechetical Leader series, you’ll discover what it really means to be a disciple of Christ, what your role as a catechetical leader entails, how leadership in a ministerial context must differ from leadership in a business setting, how to avoid burnout by maintaining a healthy balance between your personal and professional lives, and so much more.

The Character of the Deacon: Spiritual and Pastoral Foundations. James Keating. Paulist Press, 2017. Drawing on the expertise of eight distinguished theologians, this collection of essays offers a unique insight into the many facets of the character of the deacon. The essays are divided into four areas: the diaconate and Scripture, tradition, prayer, and action. This book will not only serve as a dynamic resource for the intellectual and spiritual formation of deacons, but it will also secure for the deacon who has ministered for many years what he only glimpsed at the beginning of his ministry- Christ called him into a vocation that is fuller and richer than he could have every believed.

Young People, the Faith and Vocational Discernment. USCCB, 2017.  The preparatory document looks at the current global situation, the lives of young people in the modern world, and the process of walking with young people as they discern their personal “vocation of love.” It ends with a questionnaire about young people and vocational discernment, inviting responses that will be incorporated into a working document for the October 2018 synod. This document is of value to pastors, youth leaders, families, and all interested in guiding, encouraging, and accompanying young people on their path of discernment.

Understanding the Sacraments of Vocation: A Rite-based Approach. Randy Stice, Liturgy Training Publications, 2016. This resource offers insightful catechesis on the sacraments of Holy Orders and Marriage based on the words, actions, and signs into daily Christian life.
In the Name of the Church: Vocation and Authorization of Lay Ecclesial Ministry. William J. Cahoy. Liturgical Press, 2012.  The essays of theologians at the 2011 Collegeville National Symposium on Lay Ecclesial Ministry. The essays provide the theological foundations for the vocation of the Lay Ecclesial Minister and make recommendations for advancing excellence in the ministry.
